PERFORMING ARTS
Kathak
Doing chakkars (rotations) requires one to stay centred and in tune with one’s body and the space around you. Practising this dance form has helped me become more focussed allowing me to be fully present in the moment not just while dancing but extending into other aspects of my life.
Over the years of practice, the once difficult Tatkaar, the footwork, has become a comforting rhythm to my body. Every movement and taal (rhythm) makes me feel energized, the sound of the Ghungroos, bells, on my feet, brings me comfort and allows me to block out anything else going on around me. Performing on stage, over the years, has helped me learn the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Receiving a distinction in each one of the graded examinations has been a formal recognition of my talent and hard work in this art form.Theatre
Theatre is one of my passions that I have been able to pursue as a subject in school. I have acted in productions both in and outside school and during the Covid-19 lockdown, I participated in many online skill building workshops. Selected as Ellerslie House Drama representative in my boarding school, I am leading my 60 house members in the intra school drama competition. In this capacity, I am responsible for conducting auditions, preparing the script, directing the play, costume, set, and light design.
Theatre has helped me come out of my shell. I love acting as it allows me to be more open minded. As I play different characters and get a peek into others’ lives, I have realized the importance of perspective . Adopting different personas on stage has made me more confident. I have used many of these theatrical techniques in my daily life to become more confident, sociable, and approachable.
